Wildlife

Zion is full of various different kinds of wildlife. Ranging from the adorable Ringtail to the majestic Mountain Lion. For more information hover over each animal photo.

Big Free-Tailed Bat

One unique species in Zion is the Big Free-Tailed Bat. This little animal has a wingspan of 17 to 18 inches and their calls a low enough to be heard by humans. They are not picky eaters and late in the evening these bats leave their roost in search of large moths.

Ringtail

These adorable little mammals are rarely seen living in Zion. These creatures are related to the raccoon and are nocturnal and extremely shy. They are pretty small, weighing 2 pounds and reaching 32 inches in length without the bushy tail.

Beaver

These buck-toothed animals live on the Virgin River in burrows located on the banks of the river. Their signature dams are not present as the river's flooding washes away all of their hard work. Beavers can have two to three kits (babies) that mature in about 2 years.

Mule Deer

These common creatures are happy to call Zion their home. They are surprisingly fast and are capable of reaching speeds up to 45 miles per hour. They also can jump 2 feet high and 12 feet in any direction.

Porcupine

These spiny animals are located in every habitat available at Zion. The Porcupine is the second largest rodent in North American behind the Beaver, weighing between 10-20 punds. These nocturnal animals are covered in long quills that are loosely attached for defensive purposes.

Mountain Lion

Now these solitary animals are incredible as they can jump 15 feet high and 40 feet in any direction. They These cats also hold the record for having the most nicknames, including: puma, cougar, and panther. They can also run up to 50 miles per hour!
